queer

there are straights and there are queers. i am a queer.

there are those who go along with society's norms, seemingly willingly. and perhaps for many of them those norms really do suit. but we queers find the norms oppressive, liberation for us lies in rejecting the norms.

it is political, the personal here can be the political. each queer act supports every queer, helps establish a zone beyond the old straight. ultimately queerness seeks to revolutionize society.

of course in practice this doesn't mean that everything done by a queer is good, that actual enclaves of queer culture are all without fault (i don't know much about them in fact), but the overall aspiration floats my boat.

queer can seem like a trendy posture of youthful rebels. but to appreciate that one just is one of the queers by nature is deep and difficult. the straight has such hold on most of us (certainly me), not only through contemporary society but through formative influences. not many parents have wanted their children to be queer. at school neither your teachers nor your peers told you it was good.

yet queer some of us are. we should celebrate, support and enjoy each other. xx
